British Society of Criminology Conference 2008

How to submit abstracts

In order to present a paper at the conference you will need to submit a short abstract. You may either submit a single/joint author abstract and, if accepted, the conference organisers will place it in a panel with 2 or 3 other papers. Alternatively, and we would encourage as many people as possible to do this, you can submit a panel comprising 3 or 4 papers. Please note that, other than in exceptional circumstances, the organisers will not accept panel submissions of fewer than three papers. Four is the maximum.

In constructing a panel, our anticipation is that attention will be paid to providing a selection of papers with a common theme or purpose, or that the papers will be used to develop an argument or conceptual framework. Please also nominate a chair (with his/her agreement) for the panel and if you wish, a respondent.

Each panel session will be 90 minutes long. For this reason we cannot accept submissions with more than four presenting authors (in such circumstances papers will have to be considerably shorter than usual, 12-15 minutes rather than the traditional 20 minutes). It is expected that 20-30 minutes will be reserved for discussion in all panel sessions.

Conference Themes

Authors are invited to submit abstracts on any subject within criminology. The following themes are a guide and will be used to structure conference panels:

Policing Crime; Public Perceptions and Quality of Life
Youth Justice Criminal Justice System
Terrorism and Conflict Resolution Research Methods
Risk and Public Protection Community Safety and Crime Prevention
Geographies of Crime International Perspectives
Crime and (in)equalities - power, age, race, gender and disability Theoretical Criminology

Abstract format

The abstract (max. 250 words) should outline the aims and content of the proposed paper(s). To ensure consistency and to facilitate the production of the conference book, abstracts must be submitted using the Abstract Format (Word format). Abstracts submitted without using the 'Abstract Format' will not be accepted.

Abstract Submission - Single/Joint Author(s)

Single/Joint author/s should complete the Single/Joint Author Abstract Submission Form together with the title of their paper. This Form should be submitted with the Abstract.

Abstract Submission - Panel

Authors wishing to submit as a panel must complete the Panel Submission Form. The ‘first’ author will be the primary point of contact for the conference organisers and is requested to complete the Form including brief details of the other authors and the ‘Suggested Panel Title’. This title may be changed, if considered necessary by the conference organisers. The first author will be informed. This Form should be submitted with the appropriate number of Abstracts (maximum of four).
